Conundrum of Astronomy, particularly in South East Asia

APRIM the 10th & IYA 2009, Yours to Discover?

The last APRIM, the 10th, was held in Kunming, China. Such an exotic land. Consider this picture:

or this one?

Oh well ..

APRIM? That is for: Asia Pacific Regional IAU Meeting, the 10th. Obviously, some sort of meeting on astronomy. Indeed. The experiences can be exciting, disregard there are some disappointments, dissatisfactions, let-downs, unpleasantness. People can be so much demanding for a comfortable state; but for me, just learn to get along (in fact there’s a time when my luggage want to stay longer in China than I do .. ).

Okey, what were happen back then? Many discussions on astronomy, in different front-line, from planetary to cosmology, but do note that emphasize on one thing. There is an excitement on upcoming International Year of Astronomy (IYA) 2009. Surely, here & there, everyone, astronomer, either professional or amateur, or any other professions outside astronomy working together with the worker of astronomy to make the whole things happen. So many things to do.

Consider this one: ‘The Asia Star‘. This idea, actually is an effort to collect myth & lore about the sky from region of Asia, and compiled as one book that can be read by all people. Most of Asian people might already understand about mythology of the sky based on Greko-Roma stories, but do they know the stories based from their own ancestral myth? Indeed this feature is unique for Asian, but that does not mean the hype belongs to the region only.

Then, let’s say that the book on that work published, who will read? Everyone can read, but it is more important if the young generations read the book. On this point, activities like Unawe should play major roles on building awareness for the young generations to have idea, what is our universe looks like. Look at her. She might be the next generation of astronomer from China, who knows?

Globally, there are many corner-stone projects of IYA, from the activities for young generations (e.g. Unawe) to astronomer as blogger on Cosmic Diary, so much fun yet so much to do, if you do something about that.

All in all, but APRIM is not just about the meeting, research, education, or any way one do the astronomy nor IYA & astronomy. Astronomy is not just astronomy, it is million more than meet the eyes, it this the point when one can meet old friends, be acquainted with new friends, share the fun & share the ideas & plan for something that can be taken as necessary, sooner or later (SEAAN maybe? With cards to play & beer?). Also, thanks to our dear friend, Dai Xi Bin & his wife for being such a nicest host for us in China, we never forget your kindness.

Besides, this is the last time I work side by side with Dading before he depart to Heidelberg. It has been an honour to work with him. Then next year, Hanin shall go to Tokyo. They are some of the next generations of astronomer in Indonesia, in which I have work with, from just gossip to sport on astronomy.

So, what about the astronomy in the future? Have you find something in the universe? That’s yours to discover. For me, what I need to discover is, my luggage …
